It's often said - to succeed in business it's not what you know but who you know. That's the basic premise on which networking events were founded. Janet Domrase firmly believes in that and also in community connections.

She and her husband own Alden's Kennels in Ringwood. She is the driving force behind the Multi-State Mixer, a networking event held annually on the first Tuesday in June. It was cancelled this year due to COVID-19.

The Alden's host the event and it attracts more than 300 people from a cross section of businesses. Domrase says, "It's important to bring businesses together." She feels if one business in the community is making money, they can work together so that they all make money.

The Multi-State Mixer is a two-hour free event. To make it possible, she worked with other business owners to help sponsor the event.

"Some provided food and beverages, and door prizes that showcased their businesses," Domrase said.

Looking at the big picture the Mixer has become a clearinghouse of sorts. Domrase says she is frequently contacted by business owners looking to be connected with someone they met at the event.

Whether the Multi-State Mixer is held next year is still up in the air.

"It depends on what restrictions we will face. It's a big event and I want to keep it that way," says Domrase.
