Tips to Help Your Dog Adjust to the School Year Schedule

September 20, 2020

As shadows grow longer and cooler temperatures appear on the horizon, school-age children are heading back to school. That means new schedules for everyone in your house – including your pets.

Whether your children are returning to class in person or through remote learning, their schedule has changed from the summer months which requires a change to family activities.

Consider the following five tips to help your pets adjust to the back-to-school season.

  1. Show the love. This may seem like a tall order, but make sure the kids are up early enough to give your pup some attention before beginning their school day. This includes plenty of time for feeding, walking and a little play time.
  2. Something New – or New-ish. Every dog has their favorite toy. While it’s important to keep that toy handy, consider rotating in new toys – or toys they haven’t played with much recently – every week or so. The novelty will help keep your furry family members happy and entertained when the kids are busy with school.
  3. Consider Doggy Day Care. Dogs are friendly by nature. Now may be the time to consider local doggy day care options to help your dog get out of the house to play with friends once or twice a week.
  4. After School Special. Have your kids set aside time after school to play with your dog. A game of catch or a walk around the neighborhood will give them all a chance to have fun together.
  5. Plan weekend activities. As much as possible, include your dog in family weekend hikes and fall foliage trips. After all, they’re family too!
